Political parties and organisations cannot hold or have control of any broadcasting or signal carrier licence hence they cannot be a shareholder in any broadcasting licence.

BAZ chief executive Mr Obert Muganyura says Political parties are not eligible to apply for broadcasting licences as Section 8 and 20 of the Broadcasting Services Act prohibits political parties from controlling or seeking broadcasting services so they cannot provide radio or television broadcasting services.

This comes a few days after the 17th annual Zanu PF December conference, at which the new Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa presented a document showing that the ruling party Zanu pf intends to establish a media house. He is reported to have said the ruling party aims to counter what it calls an increasingly hostile independent media so Zanu pf will shortly set up community radio station across all provinces particularly to rural masses and allow Zanu pf to reach more people, yet today we are told Political parties are not eligible to apply for broadcasting licences,…how deceitful of Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF government.
